2. Strip Old Finish: Use a chemical stripper or a heat gun to remove old paint or varnish. I love Klean Strip. <-- Click the link to purchase from Amazon! I have tried most strippers out there and Klean strip is FAR SUPERIOR!!
3. Sand the Surface: Start with a coarser grit to remove rough spots, then progress to a finer grit for a smooth finish. Typical progression is 120-150-220 for most pieces. Careful on Veneer though. I strip the old finish first and then only sand with 220 grit sandpaper
4. Repair Damages: Fill cracks, dents, and holes with wood filler or bondo, then sand smooth.
5. Prime (if painting): Apply a suitable primer to ensure the paint adheres well and the final color is even. My favorite stain blocking & adhesion primer is BIN shellac. You can also use the clear shellac for priming. My favorite bonding primer is Melange Paints Clear Bonding Primer
